Enjoy Carnival in the Canary Islands

One more year, the most anticipated and worldly known celebration in the Canary Islands is back, the Carnival! During these days, the streets of our islands are filled with costumes, music and dances performed by the numerous parades, murgas and troupes, and we find some of the most special celebrations in the islands of Tenerife and Lanzarote. Take note and enjoy Carnival with us!

SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE
Even though the most popular Carnival is the one celebrated in the capital of the island, the one in Puerto de la Cruz, declared to be of National Tourist Interest and a World Heritage Celebration, is one of the most important in Tenerife. Take advantage of your stay at Hotel Puerto de la Cruz to enjoy one of the most traditional and anticipated celebrations of the year, and you will be just a few steps away from everywhere, without having to move around too much. But, what makes Carnival of Puerto de la Cruz so special?

The elections of Queens: two events that represent the most genuine tradition and open the big celebration. Child queens will be crowned on February 4th, and adult queens on day 8th. Then, on February 10th, the Election of Queens will involve the beginning of the celebrations in the streets.

One of the most peculiar facts of this Carnival is the reception of the German Delegation. This visit, which has gone on for more than 25 years, gives the most international touch to our celebration and involves the union with the German people, so loved and an essential part of the island.

The TransQueen Gala and “Mascarita Ponte Tacón” are the most eccentric appointments on these days. During the gala, a jury will value the staging and the costumes worn by the 20 finalists in the contest, whereas “Mascarita Ponte Tacón” is a men’s high heel marathon where participants run on over eight-centimetre heels.

Besides the traditional Burial of the Sardine and the Gran Coso Apoteosis (grand final parade), the Piñata Dance, celebrated on February 18th, will close the Carnival in Tenerife.

LANZAROTE
If there is something distinctive of Carnival on this island is its duration, with celebrations connecting from one town to another for various weekends, a fact which makes it one of the longest carnivals. Even though its official length is from 15th to 18th February in the capital, considering all the towns of the island, it lasts until March 11th.

This year, the main theme focuses on “The Enchanted Carnival”, so don’t hesitate to book accommodation at our hotels Princesa Yaiza or Suite Hotel Fariones Playa and let yourself be embraced by the magic and fantasy of Lanzarote Carnival. In addition, you have over a month to decide which Carnival you would like to participate in, so we put forward below the most renowned of the island:

Carnival kicks off in San Bartolomé. On February 3rd, the parades, murgas and troupes will be ready to liven up the town with their music and dances, going on this way until next February 16th, when a peculiar Burial of the Sardine, the Burning of the Guachinango (red snapper fish) will take place in Playa Honda.

Arrecife Carnival is the most famous of the island, since it is celebrated in the capital. This year fantasy, wonderful beings, fairies and mythological creatures will be all around. The Murgas competition is one of the most important events, and at the finale on next February 9th one of the groups will be proclaimed the winner, a tradition that has been celebrated since 1989. The great ‘coso’ (carnival parade) with floats is one of the most anticipated moments, and will take place along the streets of Arrecife on the 12th of February, with music and concerts well into the early hours of the following day.

The Carnival of Puerto del Carmen will take place from 15th to 18th of February. It is one of the most famous carnivals due to its festive atmosphere, and goes on very near our Suite Hotel Fariones Playa.

The main tourist area in the south, Playa Blanca, also will have its own celebration of Carnival, from 8th to 11th of March. This year it will be Rock & Roll themed. You will definitely live some days of celebration and incomparable fun, just a few streets away from Hotel Princesa Yaiza where, in addition, on day 12th they will celebrate a spectacular Carnival themed dinner, one more reason to choose this hotel to enjoy this remarkable date in the Canary Islands.
