How to make the most out of the Romeria de los Dolores

If you have planned to visit us in September, you are lucky, because on 15th this month Lanzarote celebrates its greatest day, the Pilgrimage in honour of the Virgin of Los Dolores, and today we are giving you all the keys to live and enjoy it intensely if you are staying at the hotel Princesa Yaiza.

The Pilgrimage of Los Dolores is the most popular festivity in Lanzarote. Every year, pilgrims from all around the island go and honour their patron saint, the Virgin of Los Dolores (Our Lady of Sorrows), to thank her for having stopped the volcanic eruptions in Timanfaya and this way protecting islanders, at a cheerful celebration where you can know one of the most deeply rooted traditions in the island, and of course, have a great time. How to make the most of this great day? We will tell you below:

DRESS CODE

All islanders get dressed for the occasion with the traditional costume of Lanzarote, which is why, if you want to make the most of the Pilgrimage, do not forget to buy the appropriate clothes at any of the shops near the hotel. If you wear the special costume your memories and pictures of the experience will be a perfect depiction of this great event, which you can save in your memory forever.

STARTING POINT

Pilgrims start off from all corners of the island and gradually meet on their way to the hermitage of Los Dolores, located at Mancha Blanca, municipality of Tinajo. If you are staying at hotel Princesa Yaiza, you can start your walk at dawn, from Yaiza or from the village of Uga, both places very near the hotel and from where it will take you a four or five hours’ walk to reach the hermitage.

OTHER ESSENTIALS

To go well prepared, do not forget to plan in advance certain essentials that will make you feel carefree during your pilgrimage. In the first place, we advise you to take a sunscreen, otherwise the long walk under the sun can take its toll on your skin.

On the other hand, we recommend you to take some food and drink provisions to have at the stops you will make under the shades of the zocos, palm trees or fig trees you will find on your way. At hotel Princesa Yaiza we make it easy for you, so you can ask our staff to prepare a full picnic for your walk, which includes food and drink supplies.

Finally, remember to revise the repertoire of traditional songs from the island and start your walk ready to sing along with the spontaneous singers who cheer up all pilgrims with their popular songs.

ATTITUDE

The reason why the Romeria de Los Dolores is so important in Lanzarote is not only because of the tradition and history involved, or the religious offering to the patron virgin of the island, but also because of the joyous way inhabitants and tourists in the island celebrate it.

Let the festive atmosphere surprise you, as well as the songs, dances and local wines, the carts pulled by donkeys and camels passing by, the endless pilgrims that meet along the walk throughout the day and the great display prepared for the occasion. We’ll be waiting for you!
