Lanzarote through the eyes of Cesar Manrique

The love he felt towards the nature that surroundedhim, its people, the purity of its landscapes and the respect towards his landmade of Lanzarote his best canvas through all the expressive techniques heknew: painting, architecture, sculpture and his wind toys, impressive solidstructures he built for the wind to move them at its whim.

About Lanzarote and referring to his classmates, hewrote: ‘For me it was the most beautiful place on earth and I realised if theywere able to see the island through my eyes, then they would think the same asme. It was then that I resolved to show the world the beauty of Lanzarote”

Multidisciplinary artist, he made use of theappropriate means at his disposal to express the emotions that the islandaroused on him. Always respectful with the natural architecture of the land, his works merged with the landscape, rescuing the tradition of the place as heintroduced avant-garde concepts.

His urbanization plan of Lanzarote is, today, anexample of sustainable territory, touristic and attractive at the same time.Cesar Manrique was a staunch supporter of the environmental values of theCanary Islands. He even collaborated in the interior decoration of Hotel Los Fariones, andaddressed a sentence to the fishermen that can be read on a plaque fixed on thebeach next to the hotel, which goes like this: ‘That is not yours’, in a clearreference to the fishermen that took more fish than necessary and did notrespect the ocean.

A demonstration of César Manrique’s environmentalcommitment is ‘The Cactus Garden’, one of the last works designed by theartist, which has recently received a new international award for itspreservation of nature and its integration with local history and culture. Thisaward adds to the track record of the artist, who is in possession of the WorldPrize for Ecology and Tourism, and the Europa Nostra Prize, as well as the Goldmedal of Merit in the Fine Arts.

We must not leave apart his pictorial work, with whichhe started his artistic career and which has achieved great recognition. Hehimself used to say: ‘I consider myself a painter before anything else’. At theentrance of Hotel PrincesaYaiza, we can admire one of his imposing abstract paintings of greatdimensions.
